This belongs to the fortress series, and the cliff is doing as much work as the building. A donjon perched on rock gives the enameller a vertical composition inside a horizontal case, which forces decisions about what to crop — and on a dial 34.5 mm across, cropping is the difference between a scene and a smudge. Patek Philippe treats these architectural subjects as the demanding end of the programme, since straight lines expose any wire laid off true.
The rose gold case measures 34.5 mm in the Golden Ellipse profile, its unbroken dial field allowing a full scene at this size. The donjon and the cliff are worked in cloisonné enamel over gold, the wires establishing the masonry and the rock strata before firing. A self-winding movement drives hours and minutes with nothing else on the dial. Calfskin strap. Patek Philippe does not carry a Rare Handcrafts motif from one year into the next, so this donjon exists as one execution rather than as part of a continuing line.
